Thinking of Changing Supplier?
Stop! And ask a few questions before signing anything. Sometimes an offer might not be as good as it seems.
Here are a few questions you should find out the answer to from a potential new supplier.

Q  What is the cost per unit (or kilowatt hour - kWh) for gas and electricity?

You will need to know if the price quoted is with or without VAT (5% for domestic fuel) to be able to make a direct comparison with what you are currently paying.

Q What is the standing charge and can I get a tarriff without a standing charge

Again make sure whether the price you are quoted includes VAT or not. This usually is quoted as a daily charge but can be weekly or monthly.

Q  Are there any special discounts?

You may already be eligible for a social tariff with your current supplier and not be aware! Phone them and ask.  Ask the new supplier too.

Q  How long do I have to cancel this agreement if I change my mind and how do I cancel? Is there a termination fee?

The usual is 7 days from the date of signature (not the start of the next week!) and usually it is impossible to cancel it over the phone. If you change your mind after 7 days you can usually wait for 28 days after the transfer before changing again without a charge.

Q  How long are the prices guaranteed for and is there a capped price offer?

Suppliers are about to change prices again so it’s a good idea for everyone to consider opting for a capped price offer. This will be higher than the current rate but usually lasts for 2 years meaning you will not be affected by any upcoming rises.

Q  Do I need to change my meter?

If you do, you may have to pay an initial charge which will be refunded with interest after 12 months.  If you do not, your current supplier will still own the meter. Find out what happens if there is a problem with it and also find out the process in the event of a power cut.

Q  Where can I pay my bills and what payment methods are available?

Some methods of payment are cheaper than others; direct debit can give you up to 6% off your bill (some suppliers quote this as a reduced tariff instead of money off the bottom line). This will be the case for your current supplier too.

Other things for you to consider are:-

How long is the contract?

What happens if I cannot pay my bills?

If you have an agent call at your door make sure you are clear who this agent represents. Write the answers to these questions down and ask the agent to come back to give you time to think about it.
