Transition Towns
The Transition Town initiative
is a worldwide movement born out of the desire by local communities to plan for
the approach of peak oil.
Peak oil is the
time after which global oil production will go into decline. A growing number
of analysts believe this will happen within the next decade, some would say it
has started to happen already. It is likely to cause big spikes in the oil
price with potentially devastating economic and social impacts.
Despite the bad
news there are a surprising amount of initiatives we can take part in locally
to counteract this. Energy efficiency is
a big part of the local action as well as local food initiatives, transport
sharing and many more.
Alness has begun
many of these projects and a steering group has been formed to make the town
ready for the challenge of a time when we will have less oil available.
